Hadley DNA Project’s
2nd Anniversary
On May 2, 2003, two Hadleys received emails containing a link to a web site. Their DNA test results had arrived. Five weeks earlier, each had collected a DNA sample and dropped it in the mail. Each had read numerous articles on the web about DNA testing, but neither knew exactly what to expect or how they would react to the results. What if the results conflict with their extensive traditional research? What if it confirms the research? What if we can’t get two more participants to meet the requirements for an official family DNA Project!
In hopes that this DNA testing stuff was all it was cracked up to be, they started a letter-writing campaign to enlist other Hadley participants. They posted notices at Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com discussion boards. In a gesture of supreme confidence, they even set up a web site to hold the results and other information about the project. Another Hadley male sent in his DNA sample a week later. Then a female Hadley arranged for her cousin to participate. Finally, the first set of results was in!
Inside This Issue
A Word from FamilyTreeDNA
Bennett Greenspan, President and CEO
DNA testing for genealogy is finally becoming common place after pioneers began to apply this technology about 3 years ago.
Your project shows that some Hadley’s are related to each other while others who ‘presumed’ that they were related now know that isn’t the case, and yet others might not have known which line they descended from yet have gained that information within the scope of this developing project. As more genealogists and non-genealogists join this worldwide family reconstruction effort the results and benefits will become much more exciting.
Your group is to be congratulated for being within the first few hundred surnames on the planet to submit to organized DNA testing. I hope that all of you have found the effort worth the time taken to educate yourself about what DNA can do for your research.
